Όσο θυμάμαι την κολλεγιακή χρονιά του covid-19, η επιλογή του Patrick Williams στο #4 ήταν νομίζω υπερβολική και άστοχη. Μιλάμε για παίχτη που είχε φτωχά νούμερα, δεν ήταν βασικός στο κολλεγίο του συν ότι υπήρχε τουλάχιστον ένας από εκείνη την ομάδα που εξελίχθηκε πιο ομάλα (Vassell). Ναι μεν οι 3 πρώτες επιλογές ήταν κλειδωμένες (Wiseman, Edwards και LaMelo), ωστόσο εκ του αποτελέσματος χίλιες φορές να είχε επιλεχθεί ο Okongwu, ο οποίος θα κούμπωνε καλύτερα στο υπάρχον ρόστερ και θα υπήρχαν πιο νορμάλ απαιτήσεις από εκείνον.

Πριν από καιρό το Facebook μου είχε βγάλει ποστ από fan page, με δηλώσεις του Tyrese Haliburton μετά από work out και έλεγε ότι ήθελε σαν τρελός για να παίξει στους Bulls, και ότι επιλογή του Γουίλιαμς αποδείχθηκε λανθασμένη αφού τότε χρειαζόμασταν βασικό PG.

Καλά έχει πάει το continuity του AK.

Artūras Karnišovas says he sees what we see.

The Chicago Bulls chief basketball executive, the mastermind behind one of the worst teams in the NBA, claims he’s just as disappointed as his frustrated fan base and accepts responsibility for the collection of misfits he assembled.

That was before the Bulls’ latest embarrassment, a 124-97 loss at Boston on Tuesday that dropped Chicago to 5-14, the NBA’s fifth-worst record. Karnišovas spoke briefly to the team’s writers from shootaround in Boston, his first public comments since media day.

And with each passing game, the Bulls are showing how much lower they can sink.

Tuesday was the team’s fifth consecutive loss and eighth in the past nine games. The Bulls wrapped up a winless, four-game road trip in which they lost by an average of 15.8 points. In the past two contests, they allowed 46 3-pointers. Their offense is the league’s fifth worst. Their defense is ranked 22nd. The team’s star players are shooting below their career percentages. Young players around them aren’t sufficient.

To say everything that could go wrong is going wrong would be an understatement.

The Bulls rank near the bottom in almost every metric they sought to improve, such as pace, ball movement, paint scoring and foul shots, among others.

None of their wins have been inspiring. They snatched an improbable, one-point home win over Toronto that the Raptors gift-wrapped for them. They stole a seven-point road win at Indiana and pounded the Utah Jazz, a fellow basement dweller, by 17 at home. An 11-point home win over short-handed Detroit and another improbable, five-point home win over Miami is all the Bulls have to be proud of so far despite three seasons of continuity.

In the first-ever In-Season Tournament, which is supposed to add intrigue to the marathon regular season, the Bulls went 0-4. They never had a chance of advancing to the next stage. Their fans never had a reason to care about the zany new format.

But specially designed courts and jerseys, and violations of long-standing unwritten rules, are all just distractions — minor quibbles in another painful season that’s on the long road to nowhere. Sensible substitution patterns and strategies still would be nice to see. Discernible development remains important. Yet they’re no longer paramount.

This failed Bulls roster is Karnišovas’ baby. The onus is on him to dig the franchise out of the ditch he’s steered it into. Acknowledging that he sees, finally, what mere observers have long understood about the Bulls is at best too late and, if we’re being blunt, a slap in the face.

By running it back, Karnišovas allowed the proverbial cat out of the bag. Last season, the Bulls still were seen as a potential threat just finding its way. Now the league knows the Bulls are just bad. Now it’s no secret Zach LaVine is unhappy and open to a new home. Now everyone knows the Bulls are desperate.

It didn’t have to be this way. Karnišovas made his job harder. If he didn’t like the trade offers before, imagine what teams are offering the Bulls now. Individually, the Bulls’ players might still have trade value. But the Bulls have lost all leverage at the negotiating table. In addition to matching money, interested suitors for LaVine must now look into whether his right foot hurts more than his feelings. He left Tuesday’s contest in the third quarter due to soreness and did not return. He missed last Wednesday’s game at Oklahoma City with the same issue and said it’s been bothersome since Nov. 18.

Now it feels like the Bulls will be forced to sell low after buying high to bring together this group. Karnišovas mortgaged a significant chunk of the franchise’s future by making win-now deals for Nikola Vučević and DeMar DeRozan. He jumped at the first chance of improvement even though the pieces were a questionable fit from the start and his grand plan never had a high ceiling or much shelf life.

It makes you question the man’s sight.

If Karnišovas saw what we’ve seen, he would have blown up his hastily assembled, nowhere near-good-enough roster after the 2022 playoffs. He wouldn’t have allowed the 2022 offseason to come and go without adding only Goran Dragić and Andre Drummond and thinking they’d be difference-makers.

If Karnišovas had seen what we’ve seen, he wouldn’t have watched the 2023 trading deadline pass without waving the white flag on this failed experiment. He wouldn’t have allowed the 2023 offseason to come and go without adding only Jevon Carter and Torrey Craig and thinking they’d create a winning culture. He would have known that continuity and training camp in Nashville, Tenn., would not be the winning formula for this group of misfits.

If Karnišovas had seen what we’ve seen, he wouldn’t like his reflection. Whenever he looks in the mirror, he sees that the biggest reason the Bulls are in the sad state that they’re in is because of the man looking back at him.
